Mrs Chapman is Blossom Class Teacher and Mrs Sheldon is Blossom Class Teaching Assistant.
There are currently 10 children in Blossom Class. We practice our phonics, counting and writing daily. All children complete a Literacy and Maths task with either Mrs Chapman or Mrs Sheldon each week and then the rest of the time is spent learning through play, with Mrs Chapman and Mrs Sheldon playing alongside us to extend learning and to observe our learning. Learning and achievements are recorded in learning journeys and work books.
Learning in our class is play based and we spend most of our time learning through exploring. All of topics are chosen in response to the children’s interests and learning is planned for based on children’s individual and group needs.
By the end of their Reception year in Blossom Class, children are expected to achieve the Early Learning Goals. These focus on the children; playing co-operatively, being confident to try new things, talking about their feelings, listening in a range of situations, following multi step instructions, expressing themselves effectively, showing good control in large and small movements, understanding the importance for good health, reading and understanding simple sentences, using phonic knowledge to write phonetically correct words, counting reliably from 1-20, using everyday language to talk about measure, talking about past events, knowing about similarities and difference in the world around us and using technology and sing songs and enjoy movement.
We have one PE session a week on a Friday. Children will bring home a reading book every week which we encourage you to share at home. Children will be assigned a reading day and a book change day.
What are we learning?
This term we are learning all about different types of weather and trying to answer questions such as, ‘What happens on a windy day?’, ‘Why does it rain?’, ‘What is the weather going to be like tomorrow?’ and ‘How do you make a Rainbow?’. We will be making our own windy sticks, measuring how much rain water we have collected, making our own rainbows and even presenting and recording our very own weather forecast!

Silly Sandwiches for Healthy Living Week.
For healthy living week the children in Blossom class designed some ‘Silly Sandwiches’. We used all healthy ingredients and had the opportunity to try foods that we hadn’t tried before. Have a look at some of our silly creations.
Take a look at what we’ve been up to….
We have had such a busy Autumn half term!
We learnt all about different celebrations; finding out about Guy Fawkes, harvest, had a visit from the Fire Brigade, Owl visitors and we even travelled back in time to find out about an old fashioned Christmas- you’ll never guess who was there! We have been very busy! We can write in sentences, write tricky words, read CVC words, recognise numbers to 20, add and subtract using objects and even throw and catch a large ball.
Next half term we are going to learn about the Polar Regions, stay tuned for all of our new learning- you won’t believe your eyes at home much progress we have made!
We have had another busy half term and much of it was spent collecting milk bottles to make our giant igloo. It took lots of time and patience as it collapsed on numerous occasions but together as a team we did it! Building the igloo helped us learn all about estimating. We spent time researching facts about penguins and polar bears, and even learnt songs to help us remember who lives in the Arctic and who lives in Antarctica.
We have been spending a lot of time practising phonics and the progress we have made is fantastic. We can now all identify some initial sounds, some of us can write labels and captions, and some can even write meaningful sentences!
We have been superstars in maths too… learning the names of our numbers, counting past 20 in 1s, counting in 2s to 10 and backwards from 20. We have learnt all about more, less, combining groups and the names of coins and shapes.
We read Lost and Found and made our junk model boats focusing on how to join junk materials, designing and making as well as using clay to make polar region animals.
We celebrated Chinese New Year, made our own Chinese Dragon and then created a dragon dance with it too.
We may have been busy learning but we’ve also been having lots of fun exploring too. Take a look at the photos below to find out what learning we have created for ourselves!
Stay tuned for our ‘Castles and Knights’ topic, a trip to our local café and a visit to Lumley Castle.
